-- As respiratory therapists become increasingly vital in healthcare nationwide, Newman University's Respiratory Care program stands at the forefront of addressing workforce demands through innovative education and exceptional outcomes.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects respiratory therapy employment will surge 14% through 2032—far outpacing most occupations—driven by an aging population and ongoing respiratory health challenges. Newman's nationally recognized program, having earned the Distinguished RRT Credentialing Success Award from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC), is preparing graduates to meet this growing need.
"Our program combines rigorous academics with extensive hands-on training at leading regional healthcare facilities," said Timothy Cho, Program Director of Respiratory Care at Newman University. "We're preparing graduates who can make an immediate impact across diverse healthcare settings."
Housed within Newman's School of Healthcare Professions, the Associate of Science in Health Science degree program features strategic clinical partnerships with Wesley Medical Center and Ascension Via Christi in Wichita, Kansas. These relationships provide students with diverse patient experiences and contribute to the program's outstanding job placement success.
The program's state-of-the-art simulation laboratory allows students to practice with the same equipment they'll use in clinical settings. Fall 2024 graduate Bryson Gilchrist, who worked as a student assistant in the lab, helped peers prepare by setting up ventilators and other critical equipment.
"Working with actual ventilators in both the lab and clinical settings has built my confidence for real patient care," said Gilchrist, who was inspired to enter the field by his parent's career in healthcare.
Faculty expertise remains central to the program's success. Instructors like Cho and Stacie Fox, Director of Clinical Education for Respiratory Care, bring extensive clinical experience to the classroom, providing students with real-world insights beyond textbook learning. This practical knowledge, delivered in small class settings, nurtures both technical proficiency and compassionate care.
